If you are a free-thinking human being, then the likelihood is high that you value your ability to express your ideas.
Whether those ideas are in the form of speech, pictures, video or opinion… the form really doesn’t matter… does it?
What’s important is your freedom and ability to express yourself… and more than that… express yourself without fear of reprisal.
Now, we’re not saying there should be no place to discuss, debate and even disagree with the ideas of others… of course there should, that is what it means to be part of a free society.
But, let’s not get too far off track…
Let’s be honest, humans have been expressing themselves since the dawn of time.
Much of this expression can be classified as art… from cave paintings of buffalos to the most recent photoshopped sunset for Instagram… we have been trying to capture images for ages.
Thanks to modern technology, this art can be shared more easily than ever.
This all sounds amazing right?
This all sounds like something my elementary school aged grandchildren make use of, quite honestly, even better than their parents!
Right now you might be asking yourself… what does this have to do with cryptocurrency?
A fair question… let’s start to bring that into perspective.
Modern technology is great… iIt helps us organize our lives, keeps us in contact with each other… it allows us to share our thoughts with people around the world in real time. However, as helpful as technology can be… it can also be a double-edged sword.
Inherently, technology is neither good nor bad… it is how that technology is put to use that is good or bad…. couple that with the fact that who controls the technology matters.
If a particular type of technology is controlled by a centralized entity, like YouTube or other various social media platforms… that leaves open the opportunity to silence voices with opinions that they may not agree with.
Let The Censorship Begin
While censorship of ideas… speech… and truth is not a new concept… in recent years it has taken on a whole new, more aggressive meaning.
But what should be noted is the fact that surveys about people’s perception about their rights, freedoms, privacy & censorship happen all the time.
Check out this article talking about one of these surveys. [LINK: SURVEY PRIVACY CONCERNS]

Major social media platforms such as Facebook, X, & YouTube have been waging a censorship war against its users and even major political figures and businesses they disagree with.
This was vividly evident in the 2020 U.S. Presidential election cycle… and of course with information relating to the Coronavirus Pandemic… where platforms took unprecedented steps to de-platform users, including then-President Trump.
But the trend has only accelerated…
In 2024 & 2025, we’ve seen governments worldwide intensify online censorship through internet shutdowns, platform bans, and legal takedown demands.
Instagram was caught automatically imposing political content limits on its users without notification.
In Brazil, the Supreme Court ordered a nationwide block of X, and in India, a new system allows even district-level officials to demand social media takedowns, giving platforms just three hours to comply.
Nearly 4.8 billion people worldwide faced some form of internet censorship in 2024 alone.
These platforms impose their forms of censorship, while claiming it is to ‘protect their users.’
To confound the issue further, they spin their censorship by highlighting opinions or even facts in some cases by placing ‘Fact Checking’ notifications near certain posts.
However, they fail to ‘protect their users’ as they harvest user information and sell it to the highest bidder… and that is by far, the least offensive thing that they do with user information!

Defending Free Expression with Blockchain
Now, we will be the first to admit that there are definitely things that people post online which we, and probably most people of common sense, would deem wholly inappropriate.
That being said, there needs to be a balance between what is considered appropriate and a person’s right to free speech.
Unfortunately, as long as these platforms are designed and controlled by a centralized entity, there will ALWAYS be censorship in one form or another.
So what options do ‘we the people’ have?
For the first time in history, the average person has the ability to speak ‘their truth’ and not have it censored by some arbitrary individual at a big company.
These avenues come in the form of decentralized, blockchain-based platforms.
A sufficiently decentralized blockchain is censorship resistant and immutable.
In a nutshell, this means that once something is posted on a blockchain, it cannot be removed or altered… by storing content across a distributed network of nodes… there is no central point of failure for a government or corporation to pressure.
This is further strengthened by NFTs,[LINK: WEB3/NFT CATEGORY LINK] which allow a creator to prove immutable ownership of their content on-chain.

Enter The Future of Self-Sovereign Identity
This fight is about more than just censoring a single post… it’s about controlling your entire digital identity.
On a centralized platform, your account, your followers, your entire social graph can be deleted with the push of a button, erasing years of work.
Decentralized platforms offer a solution through the concept of Self-Sovereign Identity (SSI).
With SSI, you own your identity… it’s not tied to a specific company.
You can take your reputation, your followers, and your data from one app to another, built on the same protocol.
This is true digital ownership, the ultimate form of free expression.
It ensures that no single entity can silence you or erase your presence online.
Decentralized Platforms to Use Today
The blockchain and cryptocurrency space has brought innovation to the masses.
These improvements give people around the world the opportunity to remove themselves from the platforms that would stifle their voices.
To that end, we are going to highlight just a few of the projects within the space… most allow you to earn while you use them.
Please note that as we review these platforms, we are doing so in no particular order.
Farcaster
First up is Farcaster.
Think of it as the foundation for a decentralized “crypto Twitter.”
It’s not a single app but a protocol that many different developers can build on… this makes it incredibly resilient.
Your posts and your social graph exist on the protocol, not on a company’s server, meaning you can’t be de-platformed.
It’s the future of social networking, built for the user, not for a corporation.
LBRY / Odysee

One of my favorite decentralized platforms is LBRY.
LBRY is/was a blockchain-based, censorship-resistant file-sharing site… why the ‘is/was’?
Because during the Gary Gensler reign at the SEC, he pursued charges against LBRY.
During the years of court hearings and appeals that followed… LBRY eventually went bankrupt… you can read more about that here. [LINK: LBRY FIGHTS BACK]
Are you a YouTube creator?
Then you’ll appreciate the one part of LBRY that actually survived… and has grown…
Odysee is a decentralized YouTube… you can migrate your YouTube Channel over to Odysee.
Did we also tell you that this is on the blockchain… censorship resistant… yep, if you are a creator, you need this platform.

Mirror.xyz
For writers and thinkers… there is no better platform than Mirror.xyz.
It is a decentralized publishing platform where every article is saved permanently to the blockchain as an NFT… this means your work cannot be altered or taken down.
It is censorship-resistant writing at its finest, giving you full ownership and control over your content.
It’s the perfect home for ideas that need to be preserved.
Where To From Here
So if your privacy online is important… if your right to voice your opinion online without fear of censorship or reprisal is important… if you want to help create mass adoption of blockchain and cryptocurrency…
Then you know what to do.
Start using these platforms… share them with your friends and family and encourage them to share it too.
I’ll see you on the blockchain!
