So what exactly is this “crypto thing?”

What is Bitcoin?

What is an Altcoin?

What is the Blockchain?

More importantly, why should you care?

All great questions… and hopefully, we will adequately answer all of them to your satisfaction.

Let’s be honest… we’re all here for the money!

There..,. I said it… Let’s get it out in the open…

But just because we’re focused on building wealth doesn’t mean it’s a bad idea to know exactly what you’re investing in.

A Simple Cryptocurrency Overview

The crypto universe is vast, and the information can seem unending.

To give you some comfort with the arena you’re about to enter, let’s take a “mile-high” view.

A good place to start is a definition… according to Wikipedia, cryptocurrency is:

“a digital asset designed as a medium of exchange using cryptography to secure the transactions and control the creation of additional units.”

So what does that actually mean?

Basically, cryptocurrency is digital money… it exists online and uses cryptography… the science of secure communication… to keep transactions safe and control the creation of new units.

In 2026, this space has evolved far beyond its early days, with everything from Bitcoin ETFs on Wall Street… to entire financial systems running on DeFi.

Coins, Tokens & Wallets

Generally, these digital assets take the form of coins and tokens… and they all get stored in wallets.

These wallets are software specifically designed to hold your digital assets.

There are different types of wallets, which provide you with varying levels of security.

Ultimately, you… and only you… are in control of them and responsible for them.

[LINK: Different Types of Wallets Post] We’ll go deeper into wallets in another post.

So what exactly do these coins and tokens represent?

For the most part, they represent a share of a specific project, a platform, or a currency.

Think of them like stocks in the stock market… that’s not exactly right, but it’s a good starting point for our conversation here.

The Blockchain & What You Actually Own

Every cryptocurrency runs on a technology called the blockchain.

The blockchain is essentially a public, digital ledger.

Imagine a shared notebook that is copied and distributed across a vast network of computers… every time a transaction happens… it’s recorded as a new “block” that’s chained to the previous ones.

This makes the record permanent, transparent, and nearly impossible to change.

While the stock market analogy is a good start, owning crypto can also mean something more… it can grant you governance rights to vote on a project’s future… or give you access to a service within a decentralized application.

It’s a new kind of digital ownership.

What To Do With This Information

Realizing this is just the “mile-high” view, you may be asking yourself… “What do I do next?”

Well, the best answer is to learn more about this space.
