The Inside War Over EIP-8361: Ethereum’s Zero Rewards Proposal
Last updated on August 21st, 2026 at 09:56 am
Just when you thought Ethereum’s monetary policy was settled, a bombshell proposal drops.
Six leading researchers… including a big name from the Ethereum Foundation… have put forward a plan to completely halt new ETH issuance if staking reaches a critical mass.
This isn’t some minor tweak… it’s a direct assault on the endless yield-chasing culture that defines modern DeFi… and it’s already tearing the community apart.
The “Stake Cap” Explained
One things for sure… Ethereum has had no shortage of drama around potential upgrades lately… and this latest proposal throws another log on that fire…
The proposal… officially dubbed EIP-8361… is a radical attempt to enforce a hard cap on Ethereum’s staking participation.
Submitted by researchers including the Ethereum Foundation’s own Justin Drake, the plan would trigger a “tapered issuance burn” that would gradually slash validator rewards to zero once a staggering 50% of all ETH is locked in staking contracts.
That’s about 60.25 million ETH, or roughly $112 billion at today’s prices.
The stated goal?
To prevent excessive centralization and protect the network’s core security principles.
It’s a noble-sounding justification for a move that would fundamentally alter Ethereum’s economic incentives.
Why This Debate Is Exploding
The timing of this proposal is what makes it so explosive, especially when you consider the context.
We’re not talking about some distant, hypothetical future… this debate is crashing into a network already grappling with its identity.
Remember, it wasn’t that long ago… in September 2022… that Ethereum made its world-altering shift from Proof-of-Work to Proof-of-Stake with the Merge.
That move was supposed to be the endgame… a transition to a more efficient and scalable system.
Yet, here we are… ETH is still fighting over the fundamental economic engine.
Staking on Ethereum has been on an absolute tear, surging from 29% of the total supply at the start of the year to a whopping 34% now.
This rapid growth is happening while the community is still digesting other major changes… like the recent Pectra upgrade’s “clear signing” feature designed to improve transaction security.
And if that wasn’t enough… whispers of a “Lean Ethereum” proposal are circulating… aiming to simplify the protocol even further.
The network is rapidly approaching the proposed 50% trigger point, forcing a conversation that many would rather postpone.
This isn’t just academic debate… it’s a looming reality that could reshape the entire landscape.
The researchers are essentially trying to slam on the brakes before the staking train flies off the tracks… but a lot of passengers are about to get thrown from the car.
The Community’s Fierce Backlash
Unsurprisingly, the backlash has been immediate and brutal.
An informal check of validator sentiment revealed that a staggering 99.7% of staked ETH is signaling against the proposal.
Critics argue it’s a catastrophic solution to a problem that doesn’t exist…
They claim it would systematically push out smaller, solo stakers who can’t compete with zero rewards… ultimately concentrating power in the hands of massive, well-funded staking pools.
But others shine a light on an even deadlier blow to the blockchain…
Many are concerned that this could trigger a mass exodus of capital from DeFi protocols, as liquidity providers flee to other chains where their assets can actually earn a yield.
This isn’t just protecting decentralization… it’s potentially kneecapping the very ecosystem that makes Ethereum valuable in the first place.
Uncertain Future For EIP-8361

As of now, EIP-8361 remains just that… a proposal.
It hasn’t been formally included in the upcoming Hegotá upgrade… and with this level of community resistance… its future is anything but certain.
This is the messy, chaotic reality of decentralized governance… a few well-intentioned researchers can propose a change… but the ultimate power lies with the network’s users and validators.
And right now… those users are screaming “no.”
The fight over EIP-8361 is a perfect case study in the eternal tension between theoretical purity and practical utility in the crypto world.
The Uncomfortable Truth
EIP-8361 has forced Ethereum to have a very uncomfortable conversation about its own future.
Is it better to protect decentralization at all costs, even if it means throttling the economic engine that drives the ecosystem?
Or does this proposal represent a dangerous overreach that would centralize power and cripple DeFi?
With nearly the entire validator set already against it, this “stake cap” looks more like a non-starter… but the debate it sparked is far from over.
